How to use a sailing countdown timer at the start

Most dinghy and keelboat races use a five minute sequence. The committee boat makes a sound and raises the class flag at five minutes, the preparatory flag at four minutes, lowers the preparatory flag at one minute, and starts the race at zero. Visual signals are what count under the rules. Sounds only draw your attention.

  1. Before the warning signal, set the timer to the 5 minute sequence and hold your thumb on the start button.
  2. At the warning signal (5 minutes), press start as the flag goes up.
  3. At 4 minutes, check your timer against the preparatory flag. If you are off, press sync to bring the countdown back in step.
  4. At 1 minute, check again and sync if needed. Now start your final approach.
  5. In the last seconds, listen for the 3, 2, 1 beeps and keep your eyes on the line.
  6. After the start, the timer counts up so you can time the first beat and compare with the fleet.

Who it is for

Racing sailors who want to hit the line at full speed on the gun. Coaches running practice starts with short 1 and 3 minute sequences. Race officers who need a second, independent clock next to the committee boat's main timer. The same watch also works as a simple waterproof stopwatch for rowing, paddling and swim training.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Windie timer the same as the Windie Timer Pro?
Yes. The watch we used to call the Windie Timer Pro is now sold as the Windie Sailing Timer. Same race countdown, same sync button, new colours and limited print editions.
Which start sequences does it support?
The full 5-4-1-0 sequence used under the Racing Rules of Sailing, plus shorter 3 minute and 1 minute starts for practice races and coach led drills.
What happens if the start is postponed or my timer is a few seconds off?
Press the sync button on the next signal. The countdown comes back in step with the committee boat without restarting the whole sequence.
Will I hear it when the start comes?
Yes. It beeps at three, two and one seconds and gives a long beep on the start, so you can keep your eyes on the line and the boats around you.
Is it waterproof?
Yes, it is water resistant to 50 metres (5 ATM), more than enough for capsizes, spray and rain.
What does it do after the start?
It switches to count up, like a stopwatch, so you can time your legs and the whole race. The repeat function restarts the countdown for back to back races.
Can I read it with sunglasses on?
Yes. The display is designed to stay readable through polarised lenses.
Where can I buy it?
In the official store, windie.pro, in several colours. A 4 timer value pack is available for clubs and race committees.
